Paper Crafting With October Afternoon's Rocket Age

It's no secret that I am always on the lookout for great boy-appropriate paper lines.  But you know what the pinnicle of paper lines is?  The Holy Grail of collections, if you will? 

I know I have found a real winner when a paper line is both great for little boys AND sophisticated.  Everyone wants to get as much out of a collection as possible and themed lines have a tendency to be a one trick pony.  But not October Afternoon's new Rocket Age!  

With icons from space (comets, rockets, stars, etc.) combined with slightly more sophistcated images pulled straight out of the 1950's Rocket Age has the best of both worlds.  In fact, it's out of this world!


October Afternoon always gives us super thick, quality double sided papers and an awesome assortment of stickers but the one embellishment you absolutely NEED is the ephemera pack.  Truly, I do not know why more scrap companies haven't done this!  You get a whole bunch of die-cut elements, strips, tickets, some ribbon, and brads all on one convenient assortment pack.  Genius!

So hope on board, buckle in, and get ready for lift off in 10... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...



Rocket Man



This first layout was a no-brainer.  My husband has been reliving his childhood by building model rockets.  We had a lot of fun launching them but ended up losing a rocket after a "slight distance miscalculation".  Oops!  These photos were originally really vibrant and I created the page around them but when I was done I just kept feeling like it wasn't right.  

There was something about the bright colors that wasn't geling with the vintage elements so I changed my photos to black and white and that was the key! I cut the blue paper into rings and staggered them because I actually only had half a sheet.  ;-)



Out of this World



Ok, this picture just cracks me up!!  We were playing around with the camera on my new laptop and discovered a fun program that inputs your photos into funny backgrounds.  Naturally this was perfect for Rocket Age.  

I cut the lighter blue circle to look like a panet and sewed circles around it to give it a little extra oomph.  I used a bunch of moons and planets to echo the outer space theme on a background of dark blue.  The die cut mission control number paper was perfect for a neutral on this page.



All Systems Go!



This page was entirely inspired by the "child powered by atomic energy" sticker.  I mean, does this picture scream "atomic energy" or what!?  I trimmed down the radient striped paper so it looked like it was blasting out of my guy and added lots of matted cuts from the newsprint paper. I really like the busy, electric vibe of this page.



1, 2, 3, 4



I bet you can't even tell this layout was made from the same line... and that was my goal! ;-) I used a kraft background and doily to soften up the yellows, lights blues, and reds in this line.  My title and journaling are from the song "1, 2, 3, 4" by the Plain White T's. I used a lot of stitching, some buttons, and twine to accent the four quadrants. 



Have a Blast Card



I couldn't resist a little card at the end of this reveal! The dark navy paper and hexagonal star paper are my favorites from this line.  I fussy cut the hexagons, layered the stickers and popped up the rocket.  I covered the chipboard star with coordinating paper and added twine and a couple of stars for a dimensional touch.  So cute!!


This line is so much fun for it's intended theme!  There have been multiple spacey collections released this season but October Afternoon takes the cake for me! I love the possibilities it has beyond the rockets and comets. I can see baby cards with the softer colors and even patriotic pages with all the red, blue, and stars.

June Paper Crafting & Scrapbooking Challenges!

June is the month of weddings so this is where we are drawing our inspiration for this month's challenge. The biggest trend in weddings is going big with your accessories. We can apply this to scrapbooking by using large embellishments on our pages - use the large inspiration from ban.do to add a big bow, flower, bling, etc to your page. Color is not important but SIZE matters.

Meet Our June 2011 Guest Paper CreativeTeam Member!

Can you believe it's June already?  I can't!  LOL!  So a new month means a new Paper Guest CT.  This month meteechtap  is our June GCT!  Janet did an awesome job with the Doodlebug Nifty Notions line.  Check it out!
       
 
Name:  My name is Janet and I am currently a part-time Stay at Home Mom and a Dance Teacher. I have two boys ages 2 and 6 in which a large majority of my LOs feature them. I have been an ACOT groupie since Sept 2009 and have enjoyed every minute!!

Favorite television show?   My current favorite show is Dr. Who, since Desperate House Wives is over for the season.

Name 3 musical artists you enjoy.   Michael Buble' is definatly my fave, I also love Jason Mraz, and anything from Big Bad Vodoo Daddies(modernized 40's Swing).

Name 2 of your favorite colors.   Black and Hot pink are my faves. That being said I rarely get to use them in LO's since I have boys.

Favorite thing to do with your family?   Our current family favorite is playing a lot of different games on our Wii system together.

What's your favorite scrapping tool to use when scrapbooking?   I am in love with my distressing tool from We R Memory Keepers and their Sew Easy Tool as well.

What are your favorite adhesives?   3L Scrapbook Adhesive and Zig

What's the one thing you must have readily available when you sit down to scrap?   My Tool Carry Tote and my Paper Trimmer.

What would you like the ACOT members to know about you?    I enjoy scrapping Immensly, it is my escape from everyday stress and troubles. I have found a real home away from home with all the Cherries here. Its the best place to find creative inspriaton and friendly people!! Thank you for the wonder opportunity to shine for a moment.

"For my reveal I got to Create with Doodle Bug's Nifty Notions Collection, How CUTE!! I loved the bright colors as well as the primary colors mixed in. This line was wonderfully fun to create with and looks amazing with solid colors!"

Seamstress:  My first thought with this line was to feature our Seamstress from the Dance Studio. She has magical fingers and creative genius with material! I used the Nifty Notions Paper, with Banana Bliss Bazzill Cardstock. I made the pocket with the Nifty Notions Die Cut Paper. Then added the stitching with the Sew Easy Tool and a template from Bazzill.

 
 
It measures up 2 big fun:  The versatility of this line is fantastic. I was able to focus in on the primary colors and make a cute LO of my little Matthew. He had sooo much fun playing with Daddy's Measuring Tape, and proved to be a wonderful camera moment. I started with Celtic Green Bazzill Cardstock then layered it with Cross Stitch Paper, and Sew Plaid Paper. I inked the edge of Sew Plaid with Red and the edge of Cross Stitch in yellow to enhance the primary colors. Then once again used my sew easy tool to add another layer of dimension.

 

She's My Source:  Since this Line is about sewing, I had to do a LO about my Mom. She has sewn her entire adult life. It was a way of life for them. My Mom is one of the most creative people I know, and she is My Source of Creativity. My base is Sew Easy Plaid Paper, with a small layer of the Nifty Notions Die Cut Paper down the side. Then layering the middle with the Cross Stitch Paper and outling this with the back of the same paper.  I then added the cute text boxes from the Nifty Notions Cute Cuts, and added the Title , which is Doodle Bug Limeade Hopscotch.

 

For You Gift Card Holder:  The colors inspired me to make a gift card holder. I saw a simpler version in a scrappy source and wanted try one. I used the Nifty Notions Die Cut Paper to make the bottom,and holder. Then I added the trim from the Fancy Frills Cardstock Border Stickers. I made the flower from Sew Plaid Paper and Banana Bliss Bazzill Cardstock. I used Rain Bazzill Cardstock and Cross Stitch Paper for the Holder. Then added the super cute little flowers to finish it off.

Scrapbooking With Yankee Doodles By WeR Memory Keepers

I am one that normally tends to stay away from themed papers, but the Yankee Doodles by We R Memory Keepers really caught my eye. This line is so fun and so versatile - I had such an easy time creating with it. What I really liked about it was the fact that all the papers are double sided.  

One side is totally themed and the other is a bit more free with endless possibilities. The colors are so vibrant and bold making every page you do really stand out. When I got these products, I really wanted to challenge myself and try to use the line in a more un-themed way just to show how easy it can be done.

For my first layout I had some older pictures of my nephew that were just too cute to not use. I used the back side of the Word Doodle paper used some Glimmer Mist (which by the way, was the first time I used this product...LOVED it!)


My second layout I did was my daughter at the beach while visiting my dad in Florida. It was the first time she had ever been to the beach and boy did she love it. I used the Scalloped Doodle Die Cut paper, a bit more Glimmer mist and a Star Banner Tag. These tags are really fun. I was pleasantly surprised when I got them to see that they are embossed - really adds a little pop to the layout and tag itself.


This picture is a bit older. I have been hanging on to it just waiting for the perfect papers for it. I am so glad I waited because the Celebration Doodle paper was just what I was looking for! The colors on this paper just scream fun!


Okay, so I didn't get too far with my personal challenge but when I saw these photos my mom took on a recent trip to Mount Rushmore...PERFECT! I took the Tag Doodle paper and cut the border off  which by the way is full of wonderful glitter and then did the same with the 4th of July Doodle paper for my title. I added a few flowers and instant layout!


I have been doing an album of my son through is ROTC he is doing through school. I am trying to keep these pages simple yet bold. The back side of Doe Doodle allowed me to do just that.


If you are looking for fun, bold colored paper this line is for you - even if you don't use it for themed layouts, but it is also perfect for those 4th of July parties that will be coming up soon. Don't wait for the holiday!  Hurry to the store and get yours now. (I know I will be buying more!)
